Save what matters
Before reinstalling, copy your documents, photos, game saves and other important files to a separate drive or backup. Check that you can open the copies, and keep your account recovery details accessible.
Bring Windows up to date
After installation, run Windows Update, restart when prompted and check again. Give the system a clean starting point before adding your usual apps.
Install the drivers you need
Get graphics and device drivers from your PC, motherboard or component manufacturer. Check that your network, sound and displays work as expected.
Add your everyday apps
Install your browser, password manager, game launchers and communication apps from their official sources. Restore your files and sign in to the accounts you use.
Make it comfortable
Set your display resolution and refresh rate, choose your default apps, and review which apps start with Windows. Remove only software you recognise and no longer want.
Check, then back up
Test sound, networking and a game or two. Once everything is working, make a fresh backup so your next reset is easier.
